Have you ever wondered if TK MAXX is sustainable shopping? In my quest to try to get my kids to shop less and keep it sustainable, we visited our local TK MAXX store.
Eloise my (12-year-old) daughter has her own retro-style going on. With her pocket money budget, we sometimes shop in charity shops to make it affordable for her.
However, the big question we both begged to ask is how can this vast stock be sustainable? Surely because the company’s selling point is that it’s ‘60% less than the RRP’ does that mean the customer buys more?
TJX ( the umbrella company) work on an off-price business model which is unique to them. “We buy from all kinds of vendors – big names and designer labels, top brands, up-and-coming labels and vendors known for stylish fashion and exciting gems. We also have some merchandise manufactured for us to bring you exceptional fashion and quality at an amazing price. Our buyers choose many different colours, styles and fabrics so there is always a great choice for you. Our buyers are opportunistic and entrepreneurial. So when a designer overproduces, or other stores overbuy, we swoop in, negotiate the lowest possible price and pass the savings on.”
Eloise and I originally thought that the biggest part of TK MAXX’s sustainability is buying up excess stock which saves it from going to landfill.
When I looked further into the TJX family as they also own the lesser-known Home Sense ( a brilliant home store) and trade under TJ MAXX in the US. I really didn’t know just how much they do care for the customer, their employees and the environment.
How Sustainable is TK MAXX?
It doesn’t stop there, Ethical Sourcing with a no fur policy, with Feather & Down they’re pursuing a policy of no live-plucking or force-feeding and they’ll not sell clothes that are not appropriate for children to wear. Never knowingly selling products that contain offensive language or imagery.
Developing sustainable trade in Uganda
Working with over 4000 local people in the remote Rwenzori region of Western Uganda, TK MAXX Sustainable Trade Programme was developed in 2011. The aim of the programme is to help parents ensure their children complete primary education. We do this by helping them increase their income from the production and sale of coffee, cocoa, cotton and crafts. They are proud to sell some of these products in-store and online as part of the Made to do Good range.

As holders of the Carbon Trust standard, last year TK MAXX reduced their footprint by over 15% and are on track to reduce it by 30%* by 2020. Globally, achieving a leading rating from global carbon benchmark, the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP).
TK MAXX has a zero waste to landfill target. All waste from stores and operations is sent to be recycled. 91% of this is diverted from landfill and They’re working on the rest.
Since 2004, UK customers and associates have recycled over 1.3 million bags of clothing through in-store Give Up Clothes for Good campaign. This equates to 6,830 tonnes of clothing or 150,000 tonnes of saved carbon emissions.
Reducing Plastic Waste -TK MAXX is investing in three innovative projects to reduce single-use plastic waste.
- 1: The Ocean Clean Up – A pilot project to clean up half the Pacific garbage patch by 2025.
- 2: The Plastic Collective – An innovative pilot project that turns plastic waste into income for Pacific island communities.
- 3: In the UK – Environmental and clean-up schemes in our UK local communities.
TK MAXX helps customers reduce their carrier bag usage, they offer a variety of bags for life. The price of these includes a donation to Cancer Research UK Kids & Teens. Since the single-use carrier bag charge came into effect in England, Scotland and Wales, they donated all proceeds to good causes.
